Heckler & Koch revolutionized the AR15 platform with their HK416 rifle, and now they’re offering the same technology to the civilian market in the semi-automatic MR556A1. The MR556A1 is a piston driven rifle system, utilizing a “pusher” rod rather than a direct impingement gas system. This change means the chances of a malfunction due to an error in the gas system are almost completely eliminated.
The MR556A1 is produced in the USA using American and German made components. The MR556A1 uses many of the same assemblies and accessories originally developed for the HK416 including the HK free-floating four-quadrant rail system.
The MR556A1 takes accuracy and reliability to next level with a German-made cold hammer forged, non-chrome lined barrel. Chrome lining was performed in the Vietnam era for additional rust protecting, but it actually degraded the accuracy, as chrome lining can mask bore imperfections and affect the accuracy. This unlined barrel is in 1:7 twist, and it has been made with a slightly smaller diameter in the muzzle end. This proprietary change keeps the majority of the propellant gases behind the bullet in the lands and grooves rifling, increasing accuracy and velocity.
HK added a precise two-stage trigger and a charging handle with extended latch for faster one-handed charging and ease of use with a longer riflescope. A four position retractable buttstock is standard, and special target takedown pins assure a tight fit.
The MR556A1 is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, but is also designed to accurately shoot quality .223 Remington ammunition as well. A set of Troy Industries Micro mechanical sights, HK multi-tool,lock, and case are included with the rifle.
The HK416 has widely been considered to be one of the finest weapon systems available to the military, and has been widely used by U.S. Special Forces since its introduction. Now the civilian market can own the same weapon system in semi-auto form in the MR556A1, and still receive the same German quality and legendary HK reliability.
